"The rest of the family thought me slightly insane," Sigurd later recalled, getting up before dawn, rain or shine to hike for hours through the woods to some little creek and then at the end of the day bring home only a few six inchers, but Grandmother felt differently, knew instinctively that trout were worth all of the effort and more, that there was something other folks did not understand about the sound and feel of running water, the smell of bursting buds, no triumph after all as great as bringing home a mess of speckles.

The next morning the principal fined Sigurd and each of his friends two dollars. He also tried rolling and smoking cigarettes, which, of course, as the son of a Swedish Baptist minister, he knew was strictly forbidden. He almost got caught, too. He and his friends were sitting in a small clubhouse they had built, puffing away, when Sigurd noticed his father walking in their direction. Quickly, the boys snuffed out the cigarettes and began singing Sunday school hymns. L. J. had a very poor sense of smell, so all he noticed was the singing.
